I was so lucky to meet Miss Betty from our village of Logwood a few years ago. Besides being one of the most admired women of the village, she is the founder and director of the Logwood pre-school. She also serves as the Justice of the Peace. Miss Betty started the Logwood pre-school in a one room building with a dirt floor and has built it up to a block building with 3 classrooms and running water. Every parent hopes to be able to send their little ones to this pre-school. Somehow she makes the budget work even though many of the parents can’t pay the fee, and the challenges of supplies are never ending. Every student arrives in sparkling pressed uniforms ready to learn their ABC’s.
When one of my wedding couples, Laura and Fraser from Canada, asked if I knew of a way that they could give back to Jamaica, we talked to Miss Betty about a retired book foundation that had been set up to accept donations for the school. Like magic, the foundation is again set up to receive any donation of books or money for books! Thanks to the generosity of Laura and Fraser, the fund has been re-vitalized.
